Testimony

I worry a lot as parents we are not teaching our kids all the we should be, especially when it comes to the gospel. We try to do FHE regularly, we read scriptures every night and we always help them with personal prayers as well as having family prayer each night. I have to say that in the last few days I have been so excited to see Ethan gaining a true testimony of the power of prayer and it has given me hope that maybe we aren't doing so bad. He lost the hat to his Halloween costume the other day and I was not too happy about it. I had asked him to put it away in my room so it didn't get lost and he chose not to listen. I was not so happily helping him clean up and look for the hat and was getting more and more frustrated when he suddenly jumped up and said "Wait, I know what to do" and he immediately knelt down and said a prayer that we would find his hat. Within one minute we had found it. He was so excited that his prayer worked. The next day he was building a ship with his legos but couldn't find one of the pieces he needed. I was helping him dig through the pile legos for about 5 minutes with no luck. I was convinced it had been lost somewhere along the way. He then suggested we say a prayer. I, of course, was thinking that I was going to have to explain that Heavenly Father hears all of our prayers but he doesn't always answer them right away. After all I had looked for 5 minutes so I KNEW it wasn't there. I'm sure you already guessed that within 30 seconds of finishing the prayer he found the piece. He sure taught me a good lesson. The best part of the story happened last night and today. Unfortunately when Ethan went in for his 6 month dental check-up we found out that he had 4 cavities. They tried to fill a few of them that day but he wasn't very cooperative so they sent us home with a prescription and an appointment scheduled for today. Last night Ethan started crying and said that he was really scared, I did my best to comfort him throughout the whole bed time process. When it came time for him to say his personal prayers he asked for help to not be scared tomorrow. This morning after giving him his medicine to make him tired, we said another prayer asking for him to be comforted and not scared. He did great! He didn't fight them and they were able to get the work done without any issues. As we were driving home I told him I was proud of how brave he was and he said that he was able to be so brave because he had prayed and asked Heavenly Father to help him to not be scared. I love that he is learning to go to his Heavenly Father when he has a problem and especially when he is feeling scared or uneasy. He has reminded me of the power of prayer. Heavenly Father hears every prayer and no matter if we are asking for comfort or to find a lego, He is listening and will answer. So I am glad that Ethan is gaining his own testimony and helping build mine in the process. Man, I love that kid!

I really identified with your thoughts. I too always wonder if I am doing enough in helping my kids learn the gospel. It is neat to see Ethan have such a visible testimony; kids always have the most faith.
